Dimitar Penkov is presently known as one of the most brilliant and exciting European
viola players. Born in Sofia, Dimitar Penkov received his musical education at the High
School of Music and the Sofia Music Academy as a pupil of Prof. Stefan Magnev and
Dimitar Chilikov.
When only 21, Penkov took part in the most important Bulgarian National Competition for singers and players. He demonstrated a "rare combination of musical talent, dazzling skill, maturity nad intelligence" and became the youngest ever 1st prize and Gold medal winner of this contest (1974). After this success,Penkov became a sought after soloist and chamber music player at home and abroad.
In 1977, the young musician received his first international recognition, winning top -prize at the prestigious Geneva International Competition. In 1979, Penkov took his final studies with Prof. Ifrah Neaman in London. Prof. Neaman was delighted with Dimitar's success: "Penkov is a brilliant player, perfect musician and sensitive chamber music performer." In the following years, as a member of the famous Bulgarian Radio String-Quartet, Dimitar Penkov successfully toured most of the European countries. In 1985 he was granted the solo position in the distinguished NDR-Radiophilharmonie, Hannover. Since then, his prosperous artistic work included constant care and development of his solo career.
In 1985, Penkov was invited by Pierre Bartholomée to perform
the premiere in France of Krzysztof Penderecki's Viola
Concerto at the Festival of Contemporary Music in Metz. In
recent years, his remarkable CD recording of this piece
and of the Viola Concerto by Alfred Schnittke for
GEGA NEW was immediately recognized as a world
-class performance (Das Orchester)
Penkov has
performed as a soloist under the baton of Aldo
Ceccato, Pierre Bartholomée, Lutz Herbig,
Gilbert Varga, Anthony Bramall, Konstantin
Iliev, Michael Tabachnik, Nikos Athineos,
Otmar Maga and Alun Francis.
Dimitar Penkov's recordings include the
broadcasting networks of Radio France,
Sofia, Zürich and Moscow as well as the
companies Gallo, CPO, GegaNew and
Fox Records.
